981,903. Airships. H. KAUFFMANN. March 21, 1962 [March 22, 1961], No. 10908/62. Heading B7W. A rigid or semi-rigid airship has a first gas cell receiving buoyant gas under the pressure of the surrounding atmosphere and a second gas cell receiving buoyant gas at a pressure slightly above atmospheric, and means to impel gas from one cell into the other. The airship has a central duct housing a propeller for impelling air through the duct for drive, control surfaces in the rear end of the duct, Figs. 5-7, not shown, affording control of the airship. Double-walled gas cells b, c and air cells d are provided so that by allowing gas to flow from cells b, c via valves e or pumping it back by pump f and allowing air to correspondingly flow out of or into cell a via valve g or pump h, the buoyancy of the airship can be adjusted. The .space between double-walled cells b, c traps gas diffusing through the inner wall, such gas being pumped back by pump i. The outer skin of the airship is sheet metal or other flexible material with the longitudinal ribs of the envelope frame outside the transverse ribs; stiffening ribs extend from the duct to the outer frame, Figs. 10, 12, not shown. Additional outboard propellers and control surfaces may be provided, Figs. 8, 9, 11, not shown.
|
