A non-woven film or paper-like fabric consists wholly of stereoregular polyolefine fibres at least 10% of which are undrawn and up to 90% of which are drawn, at least a proportion of the fibres being bonded together at the crossover points. Suitable polyolefines include linear polyethylene, isotactic or syndistatic polymers of propylene, isobutylene or 4 methyl-pentene-1, or crystalline copolymers of olefines having a stereo-regular structure. The drawn and undrawn fibres which may be of chemically different but structurally similar polyolefines may be blended, e.g. by carding, and the bath or web of fibres obtained is heated under pressure to a temperature 10-60 DEG C. below the melting point of the lowest melting component of the bath or web. Pressing may be effected between heated platens or calender rolls to effect softening and bonding of the fibres of the batt. Transparent, translucent or opaque films or paper-like products may be obtained which are useful for packagings, wall-coverings, carpet backings, reinforcements for plastic articles, electrical insulation or apparel. Prolonged exposure to moderately elevated temperatures produces no embrittlement of the films or fabrics produced. It is stated that crimped fibres may be used but with little advantage as regards strength.
|
