A battery system has two or more rows of cages 1A, 1B the cages of each row being suspended from a rod 6 which rests on arms 2A or 2B canti-levered from pillars 5 or other supports and can be moved along the arm to bring the rows into and out of stepped relation and longitudinally to release the cages of the row. The cages are supported at their upper rear edges by the arms 2A or 2B and are normally arranged in a stepped formation so that droppings fall directly on to the ground. Brackets 9 which hook on to the rods 6 support water and food troughs 7, 8 which form bars across the open fronts of the cages to keep the animals within the cages. A door is provided at the top of each cage. |
