Guanosine - 51 - monophosphate is obtained by cultivating a suitable strain of bacteria in a culture medium comprising an assimilable carbon source, an assimilable nitrogen source, an assimilable phosphorus source, one or more inorganic salts, and one or more organic nutrients (defined as a natural amino acid, nucleic acid, nucleic acid hydrolysate, or vitamin or a substance yielding one or more thereof) under aerobic conditions at a pH of from 6 to 9, and separating the accumulated guanosine-51-monophosphate from the cultured medium. Suitable organic nutrients include glutamic acid, aspartic acid, glycine, other amino acids, yeast, yeast and animal tissue extracts, protein hydrolysates, corn steep liquor, vitamins and fatty acids. The product may be isolated by absorption on ion-exchange resin (formate form) and elution with formic acid/sodium formate buffer, followed by lyophilization. The bacteria used may belong to one of the genera Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Flavobacterium, Achromobacter, Brevibacterium, Xanthomonas, Protaminobacter, Aeromonas, Kluyvera, Vibrio, Agrobacterium, Alcaligenes, Escherichia, Aerobacter, Eruwinia, Serratia, Proteus, Micrococcus, Sarcina, Staphylococcus, Arthrobacter, Coryne, bacterium or microbacterium.
