The present invention relates to a base station (BS) and to a method for supporting UE positioning measurements in a wireless communication system. The method comprises transmitting (610) signals associated with a first cell, where the signals comprise positioning reference signals. The method also comprises transmitting (620) signals associated with a second cell, wherein the second cell is configured to have a lower transmission capacity than the first cell, and discontinuing (630) the transmission of at least one signal associated with the first cell except for the positioning reference signals. The energy consumption of the BS may thus be reduced while still supporting accurate positioning measurements.
