Mechanism for actuating a swing door 10 comprises a double acting hydraulic motor 12 connected to the door 10, a two-way valve controlling supply of fluid to opposite ends of the motor causing door movement in either direction, control means operating in response to the presence of a person to actuate the valve to direct fluid to one end of the motor to move the door to an open position, safety means on the opposite side of the door to prevent the door being opened, and biasing means arranged to actuate the valve in a sense to move the door to its closed position when operation of both the control means and the safety means is discontinued. The two-way valve mechanism 26 (as shown in Fig. 3) has a piston 102 slidable in an openended bore 100, and is formed with an inlet port 104 connected to the outlet port 24 of the pump 16, and two outlet ports 106, 108 connected respectively with one-way valves 113, 115 to supply pipe 28 and similarly to supply pipe 30. Thus the piston 102 may occupy positions in which it connects the fluid supply to either side of the motor or alternatively to a neutral position. A plunger 110 slidable in cylinder 112 forms a time-delay means drawing liquid into the bottom of the cylinder which also flows through a by-pass passage, allowing fluid to be exhausted from beneath the plunger 110. The control mechanism comprises a pair of pivoted spring-loaded bellcranks, interconnected by link means, one of which is adapted to operate switches 146, 148 and a solenoid 136, and the other is adapted to operate switch 150 and a solenoid 137. The vane 46 of the motor moves through a quadrant and is locked in the two end positions by means of a spring-loaded plunger operable by hydraulic means in synchronism with the valve. In operation, a person stands on mat 156, switch 152 is closed and solenoid 136 energized rotating one of the bellcranks to close the motor switch 146 to start the motor 18 to drive the pump 16 thus causing fluid to pass through the valve 26 to one side of the motor vane 46 and also to release the locking plunger. At the end of the clockwise motion, the bellcrank opens switch 148 rendering the solenoid 137 inoperable and de-energising the control solenoid. Simultaneously the lever returns due to biasing means 142 (see Fig. 2, not shown), the action being delayed through the time delay mechanism. Assuming a person passes the control mat 158 the door closes automatically due to reversal of the hydraulic connections to the motor. If a person stands on the safety mat, switch 154 closes and solenoid 137 is energised, the bellcrank 134 (not shown) is moved clockwise opening the safety switch 150 to isolate control solenoid 136 raising the valve piston to its intermediate position so that the door is held closed or is arrested.
