An electron impact (EI) or chemical ionisation (Ci) ion source for a mass spectrometer is disclosed comprising a metallic boride coating or surface. The metallic boride coating or surface may be provided, for example, on at least a portion of one or more ionization chambers 2, one or more repeller electrodes 3, or an exit plate or exit aperture through which ions are transmitted. The metallic boride coating or surface may comprise a transition metal boride or diboride, boride or diboride alloy, or a mixed metal boride or diboride alloy. The coated surface of the ion source is intended to reduce adsorption, degradation or decomposition of compounds upon contact with the surface prior to ionization. |
