A catalyst composition comprises (a) from 0,5-30% by weight of T1+ and/or T1+++, (b) iron or lead ions, and (c) an inorganic oxide support containing at least 50% by weight of oxide selected from the oxides of aluminium, silicon, magnesium and, when (b) comprises lead ions, the oxides of iron. Additionally the catalyst may contain one or more of chromium, cobalt, nickel, palladium, platinum and silver ions. When the inorganic oxide is Al2O3 it is preferably in the a -form. The thallium ions may be present as oxide or hydroxide or as a salt of organic or inorganic acid, e.g. thallium nitrate, sulphate, silicate, phosphate, chromate, dichromate, molybdate, vanadate, and tungstate or as thallium phosphomolybdate or tungsten molybdate. The catalyst may also contain boron ions. Examples are given. |
