1,086,622. Optical apparatus. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON HOUSTON-HOTCHKISS BRANDT. Feb.12, 1965 [Feb.14, 1964], No. 6286/65. Heading G2J. Coherent light is transmitted over great distances through a chain of tubes placed end to end, each tube containing at least a partical vacuum or a medium such as dry air or nitrogen which is substantially non-absorbent to such radiation, each tube T n , T n+1 , Fig. 2, having an optical system such as a lens L' n , L n+1 , at each end, there being an auxiliary optical system S between each pair of adjacent tubes so that over a limited range of movement, the optical systems compensate for misalignment of the tubes, and an arrangement is provided to ensure that the tubes are maintained within such limited range. The system S may comprise an optical fibre which transfers the image S' n formed by lens L' n to the focus S n+1 of lens L n+1 . Each tube may be floated in liquid (L), Fig. 1, not shown, in a trough (C), the liquid level being controlled to ensure the correct vertical positioning of the tube, a sprung dashpot (R) providing for lateral stability. A series of such troughs (C) may be inter-connected and the liquid may be circulated to maintain a constant temperature. |
