In a refrigerator having a freezing compartment 6 cooled by evaporators 4<SP>1</SP> and 5<SP>1</SP> which are connected in series by a capillary tube 3<SP>1</SP> the lower temperature evaporator 5<SP>1</SP> is defrosted without defrosting evaporator 4<SP>1</SP>. The refrigeration circuit includes a reversing valve 21 which in its normal position shown in Fig. 3 causes refrigerant to flow from compressor 14<SP>1</SP> through condenser 15<SP>1</SP>, capillary 16<SP>1</SP>, receiver 23, evaporator 4<SP>1</SP>, capillary 31 and evaporator 5<SP>1</SP>. For defrosting, the valve 21 is operated to supply compressed refrigerant directly to evaporator 5<SP>1</SP> which functions as the condenser of the system, the refrigerant evaporating in evaporator 4<SP>1</SP> and being returned to the compressor inlet via a pipe 22 by passing the condenser 15<SP>1</SP>. Valve 21 may be operated automatically at fixed intervals. The evaporator 4<SP>1</SP> forms the rear, top and bottom walls 6, 7 and 8 respectively of the freezing compartment 6 (Fig. 1), and the evaporator 5<SP>1</SP> forms the side walls 9 and 10 of said compartment, screens 11 being positioned on the inside of said side walls. A tray 13 and drip channels 12 are provided beneath the compartment 6. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), the evaporator 5<SP>1</SP> is defrosted by an electric heater which is switched on when a valve in a pipe by-passing the evaporator 5<SP>1</SP> is opened.
