In a refrigerator having a freezing compartment 6 cooled by evaporators 41 and 51 which are connected in series by a capillary tube 31 the lower temperature evaporator 51 is defrosted without defrosting evaporator 41. The refrigeration circuit includes a reversing valve 21 which in its normal position shown in Fig. 3 causes refrigerant to flow from compressor 141 through condenser 151, capillary 161, receiver 23, evaporator 41, capillary 31 and evaporator 51. For defrosting, the valve 21 is operated to supply compressed refrigerant directly to evaporator 51 which functions as the condenser of the system, the refrigerant evaporating in evaporator 41 and being returned to the compressor inlet via a pipe 22 by passing the condenser 151. Valve 21 may be operated automatically at fixed intervals. The evaporator 41 forms the rear, top and bottom walls 6, 7 and 8 respectively of the freezing compartment 6 (Fig. 1), and the evaporator 51 forms the side walls 9 and 10 of said compartment, screens 11 being positioned on the inside of said side walls. A tray 13 and drip channels 12 are provided beneath the compartment 6. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), the evaporator 51 is defrosted by an electric heater which is switched on when a valve in a pipe by-passing the evaporator 51 is opened.
