<p>An aqueous textile adhesive or coating comprises a blend of (A) a latex containing a copolymer of at least two ethylenically unsaturated monomers selected from styrene and monomers copolymerizable with styrene, 0.5-10% of the monomers having at least one substituent carboxyl or carboxylate group and (B) a water-soluble adduct which is film-forming below 100 DEG C. of an epihalohydrin and ammonia, an alkylene polyamine, and/or a polyalkylene polyamine, which adduct has an inherent viscosity of less than 0.1 at 25 DEG C. in a 1% solution in water containing 5% HCl. The coating may be dried and heat-cured, e.g. at 93-177 DEG C. The copolymer may contain 1-4% of methacrylic acid acrylic and/or fumaric acids or salts, together with styrene and/or 1,3-butadiene and acrylonitrile or ethyl or n-butyl acrylate or methacrylate. The adduct may be an adduct of 0.5-2.8 moles of epichlorohydrin or epibromohydrin and ammonia or an alkylene polyamine of formula H2N[(CH2)xNH]n(CH2)xNH2 where x is 2-3 and n is 0-4, e.g. ethylene diamine. The composition may also contain calcium carbonate and sodium polyacrylate.ALSO:Woven and nonwoven textile fabrics, e.g. rugs and woollen tufted carpets, are coated with an aqueous coating comprising a blend of (A) a latex containing a copolymer of at least two ethylemically unsaturated monomers selected from styrene and monomers copolymerisable with styrene, 0.5-10% of the monomers having at least one substituent carboxyl or carboxylate groups and (B) a water-soluble adduct which is film forming below 100 DEG C. of an epihalohydrin and ammonia, an alkylene polyamine and/or a polyalkylene polyamine, which adduct has an inherent viscosity of less than 0.1 at 25 DEG C. in a 1% solution in water containing 5% HCl. The coating may be dried and heat cured.</p> |
