<p>A method of mass spectrometry comprises performing ion mobility and mass analysis of parent or precursor ions in a survey scan, determining the charge states of the parent or precursor ions based on the combinations of ion mobility and mass to charge ratio determined in the survey scan, selecting a parent or precursor ion for fragmentation or reaction, and fragmenting or reacting the selected ion using conditions that are selected based upon the determined charge state. The selected fragmentation or reaction condition may be an optimal fragmentation or collision energy based upon the determined charge state of the parent or precursor ion. Alternatively, the selected fragmentation or reaction condition may comprise selecting an appropriate fragmentation or reaction techniques based upon the determined charge state, for example fragmenting relatively high charge state ions using electron transfer dissociation and fragmenting relatively low charge state ions using collision induced dissociation.</p> |
