619,821. Vehicle suspensions. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. Dec. 30, 1946, No. 38050. Convention date, Jan. 19. [Class 108 (ii)] A vehicle suspension of the kind comprising a wheel-supporting member 18 pivoted about a longitudinal horizontal axis 21 and connected by a torsion spring 24 to a frame member 14 of the vehicle, has the longitudinal axis of the torsion spring disposed at an angle to the said pivotal axis 21 so that these two axes intersect at a point adjacent the vehicle frame member, whereby the torsion spring moves on the surface of an imaginary cone during suspension movements and is subjected only to torsional stress. The forward end of the torsion bar 24 is bent into a U-shape 26. One arm of this U-shaped member passes through a sleeve 28 which is mounted in the lever 18 in laterally-spaced relation to the axis 21, and the other arm enters a second sleeve 30 also mounted in the lever 18. The rear end of the bar 24 is reversely bent into a U-shape 27, of which one arm engages a groove 31 in the underside of the lower flange 32 of the frame member 14, while the other arm thereof rests on the upper surface of the said flange. The torsion spring might, alternatively, be connected to the lever and to the frame by flanges or splines instead of by U-shaped ends.
|
