Multi-order diffractive optical element for concentration of broadband electromagnetic radiation

An optical element for collecting broadband electromagnetic radiation includes an input face and an output face. The first input face receives electromagnetic radiation of many wavelengths consistent with a broadband spectrum such as the sun. At the second output surface the light exits the optical element in the direction towards a focus where the electromagnetic energy is received by a receiver. One or both of the first input and second output surfaces incorporates a multi-order diffractive component which contributes in whole or in part to the deviation of light rays from their incident direction toward the region of the focus of the optical element.
