Check valves 92,94,96 between a pressurized oil manifold 82 and the stator assembly prevent lubrication oil starvation of the bearings 76,78 by allowing oil additionally acting as coolant to flow to the stator only when oil pressure is sufficient, an electronic control system, fig 9, preventing machine overheating when oil pressure is low by selecting a current-limiting strategy. Valves 92,94 direct oil onto the end turns 98,102 of the coils and valve 96 supplies an oil gallery 100 (140 fig 3) formed in the back-iron which drips oil via passages 142 (fig 3) into the inter coil spaces 144 (fig 3) from which it exits axially. A shield 110 is provided in the rotor/stator air gap to guide coolant back to a drain 106 via collection area 104 within the machine housing without coolant gaining access to the rotor 66, the housing being formed by sections 72,73. The machine may form a motor in a electronically controlled turbocharger. |
