<PICT:0990972/C6-C7/1> A basic nitrogen containing organic compound which is soluble in aqueous acid solution and insoluble in alkaline solution is deposited on a photoconductor bonded to an electrically conductive carrier, by contacting the photoconductor with a solution of the salt of the organic compound, and passing a current so that at the carrier cathode hydrogen is liberated to raise the pH above 7, thus depositing the compound. The compound may be colourless or coloured and is preferably of the formula <FORM:0990972/C6-C7/1> where M is an organic radical, R and R11 are hydrogen or alkyl with up to 18 carbon atoms, m is less than 4 and p and n are less than 6. The electrolyte may also contain dispersed particles such as carbon black and titanium dioxide which are codeposited with the basic compound. As shown, the carrier 26 for the photoconductor layer 28 is placed on the metal base 12 of the cell which also serves as cathode connection and the perforated anode 22 rests on a ledge 20 in an open insulating frame 16 of polythene, P.T.F.E. or polytrifluorochloroethylene clamped between the base and an upper frame 14.
