In hydrorefining crude petroleum oils, or fractions thereof, containing pentane insoluble asphaltenes, the oil is mixed with at least one heteropolymetallic acid containing phosphorus or silicon and molybdenum or tungsten, the mixture is heated at below 310 DEG C. for a time sufficient to decompose the acid, and the resulting colloidal suspension is reacted with hydrogen at above 225 DEG C. and 34 atmospheres. The acid is preferably added in the form of a solution in an alcohol containing not more than 10 carbon atoms per molecule. The sludge obtained by separating the hydrorefined product, which contains catalyst, may be recycled to a fresh batch of oil. Heteropolymetallic acids mentioned are phospho- and silico-tungstic and molybdic acids. |
