The present invention relates to an apparatus for controlling the thickness of a rolled steel sheet and a method for controlling the thickness of a rolled steel sheet. The apparatus comprises: multiple rolling stands for rolling a steel sheet to have target thickness; multiple thickness gages installed on the rear end of rolling stands respectively to measure the thickness of the rolled steel sheet; a thickness measuring unit which selects the closest thickness gage to the rear end of the final rolling stand excluding dummy rolling stands of the thickness gages and which controls the gage to measure the thickness of the rolled steel sheet; a control unit which generates a control signal for correcting a difference between the measured thickness of the rolled steel sheet, which is measured by the thickness gage selected by the thickness measuring unit, and the target thickness; and a drive unit for correcting the difference by adjusting a roll gap of the rolling stand depending on the control signal.
