[Class 7(iii)] A combustion chamber 1, formed in the piston head, has a shape formed by rotation of a part of an ellipse about its shorter axis and one or more recesses 4, 5 are formed tangentially of the mouth of the chamber so that swirling is produced in the chamber on the compression stroke. The injector nozzle 6 is arranged so that at top dead-centre its axis coincides with the axis of a recess 4, or is inclined to said axis at an angle less than a right-angle.
