PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem of inability of conventional segmented sealing ring assemblies to maintain a consistent seal over time as components of the seal assemblies wear.SOLUTION: A seal assembly 210 for a reciprocating piston system compensates for uneven wear rates between ring components of the seal assembly 210 by initially sizing the width of a portion of a sealing ring 212 to be larger than the width of an annular recess 219 in a cover ring 214, the portion of the sealing ring 212 at least partially overlapping a gap 218 in the cover ring 214 but not a gap 216 in the sealing ring 212.
