PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably improve a contrast of a projection image.SOLUTION: Of an angle formed by optical axes c1 and c2 of refractive index anisotropic layers 12g-1 and 12g-2 of a phase compensation plate 12g and a z-direction serving as a normal direction of an incidence surface of an image display element 11g, let an acute angle or right angle be defined as an axis angle, each refractive index anisotropic layer has a fixed axis angle, and when the phase compensation plate 12g is composed of two refractive index anisotropic layers, an axis angle &thetas;1(=&thetas;max) of the refractive index anisotropic layer near a polarization separation element is greater than an axis angle &thetas;2(=&thetas;min) of the refractive index anisotropic layer away from the polarization separation element and a condition of 20°≤&thetas;max-&thetas;min≤80° is satisfied, and let an average of the axis angles of two refractive index anisotropic layers be &thetas;ave, a condition of 40°≤&thetas;ave≤70° is satisfied. |
