PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a glass substrate for a magnetic disk, in manufacture of a glass substrate for a magnetic disk having a pair of main surfaces, an inner periphery end surface, and an outer periphery end surface, which is capable of: suppressing occurrence of damage on an outer periphery end surface of a glass substrate when processing (grinding or polishing) the main surfaces of the glass substrate; preventing mechanical strength of the glass substrate from lowering; and hardly forming foreign materials such as fine particles on the main surfaces of the glass substrate for a magnetic disk.SOLUTION: A method for manufacturing a glass substrate for a magnetic disk comprises: a main surface processing step of grinding or polishing a pair of main surfaces of a glass substrate of a magnetic disk while holding an outer periphery end surface of the glass substrate for a magnetic disk in a holding hole provided on a holding member, in a state where a protective layer is provided on the outer periphery end surface of the glass substrate for a magnetic disk; and, after the main surface processing step, a removal step of removing the protective layer from the glass substrate for a magnetic disk. |
