The device has an X-ray source (1) e.g. X-ray tube, irradiating a sample (3) with quasi-monochromatic x-radiation (2). An energy resolving detector (6) e.g. photon-counting detector, detects X-ray radiation that is scattered from the sample. The energy resolving detector converts detected photons with energy smaller than border energy into a first output signal and converts detected photons with energy larger than or equal to the border energy into a second output signal. An analysis unit (13) e.g. field programmable gate array, analyzes the sample based on the two output signals. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for analyzing a sample (2) a computer program product comprising a set of instructions to execute a method for analyzing a sample.
