The display system (1) has a camera (4) which captures an image of a rear portion of the motor car (2). A display device (3) electronically displays captured image of the rear portion from the camera. A viewing direction detecting device (6) detects whether the driver looks at the display device. A control unit (5) adjusts the brightness and/or contrast of the image displayed on the display device depending on whether the driver is looking at the display device. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) method for operating display system; and (2) device for operating display device of display system.
