PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: an organic EL element having high luminous efficiency and long emission life; and an illuminating device and a display device that comprise the organic EL element.SOLUTION: An organic electroluminescent element has a light-emitting layer interposed between an anode and a cathode. The light-emitting layer contains a phosphorescent dopant having a molecular weight not less than 1,000 and not more than 5,000, and a host compound having a molecular weight not less than 800 and not more than 3,000. The phosphorescent dopant has a substructure represented by the general formula (1). The host compound is a carbazole derivative represented by the general formula (6), (7) or (8), or is represented by the general formula (9). |
