An ECU is installed in a vehicle provided with an engine and a motor capable of generating cranking torque imparted to a rotating shaft of the engine. When there is no engine startup request (NO in S10), the ECU determines whether or not the engine is rotating by inertia (S11). The ECU changes a cranking target torque (TCtag) in accordance with an engine speed (Ne) (S12). It is thereby possible to reduce and keep the cranking engine speed (Ne) at an optimal range for avoiding accidental fires and vibration.
