PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a flame-retardant resin composition which has excellent water resistance while securing excellent mechanical characteristics and excellent flame retardancy, and to provide a flame-retardant resin composition and a cable using the same.SOLUTION: The method for producing a flame-retardant resin composition includes at least the steps of: adding 3-15 pts.mass of a silicone-based compound (B) with respect to 100 pts.mass of a polyolefin-based resin (A); adding 50-150 pts.mass of surface-treated magnesium hydroxide particles (C) obtained by surface-treating magnesium hydroxide particles with a hydrophobic compound with respect to 100 pts.mass of the polyolefin-based resin (A); and adding 5-20 pts.mass of a molybdic acid compound (D) with respect to 100 pts.mass of the polyolefin-based resin (A). The molybdic acid compound (D) is a divalent metal salt of molybdic acid.
