The present invention allows good transmission and reception of a plurality of streams, made into one stream, to and from an external device. A composite stream created by compositing together transport-stream packets from a plurality of transport streams is transmitted to an external device. When doing so, a specific count value is added to a count-information region provided in each transport-stream packet in the composite stream. The external device can be informed of a lack of support for packet-order rearrangement using count information, and a composite stream having transport-stream packets in the same order as when transmitted can be received from the external device.
