According to the invention, the axial piston expander for a heat recovery device (2) of a motor vehicle has a stroke-adjusting device, wherein the stroke of the pistons (27) can be set by controlling the pressure in a driving chamber (43). According to the invention, the expansion machine is an axial piston expander (11), the stroke of which can be controlled by means of a driving-chamber pressure and the output shaft (14) of which is or can be coupled to the drive train (7) of the internal combustion engine (1) in order to transfer mechanical driving power.
