The method involves applying a thermally expanding structural adhesive in a form of an adhesive strip (8) i.e. single sticking fusion sealing tape, which is attached to an inner metal sheet (2) and an outer metal sheet (3). A rebate flange is folded along direction toward the internal component to produce a fold gap. A region of a flange seam (1) is heated such that the structural adhesive of the adhesive strip is melted, expanded and stretched. A coating is applied in a region of the flange seam that is attached to the internal and external components.
