The invention relates to a method for estimating a street type, said method being carried out by an electronic computing device and having the following steps: receiving surroundings data on the basis of a sensor measurement; estimating the street type using a decision tree based on the surroundings data; estimating the street type using a state machine based on the surroundings data; and forming a total estimation of the street type on the basis of the estimation using the decision tree and the estimation using the state machine.
