PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device and a method for driving the device capable of improving display quality.SOLUTION: The display device includes: a first substrate which includes a common electrode disposed over a plurality of pixels in an active area, an insulating film disposed on the common electrode, a pixel electrode electrically connected to a switching element and disposed in each pixel on the insulating film and having a slit that opposes to the common electrode, and a first alignment layer covering the pixel electrode; a second substrate which includes a second alignment layer opposing to the first alignment layer; a liquid crystal layer comprising liquid crystal molecules, which is held between the first alignment layer and the second alignment layer; and a driving unit which supplies a voltage in accordance with a gradation to be displayed in the pixel, with application of a DC bias, to the pixel electrode, and which applies a higher DC bias in a white display state where a potential difference is induced between the pixel electrode and the common electrode, than a DC bias in a black display state where no potential difference is induced between the pixel electrode and the common electrode. |
