PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for protecting a high throughput (HT) terminal.SOLUTION: (1) A legacy preamble of a physical layer (PHY) transmitted by one terminal is decoded by another terminal that does not use a legacy preamble. (2) One terminal is identified by another terminal by using bits in the preamble of a packet to indicate which PHY type will be used in the remaining portion of the packet. (3) One terminal transmits ready-to-send (RTS)/clear-to-send (CTS) or CTS-to-self messages for reserving a medium in the presence of another terminal of a different type than the terminal itself. (4) An access point (AP) transmits a beacon or an association message including a capability information element (IE) that indicates operation or support for a legacy preamble, HT terminal preamble and a medium access control (MAC) packet transmission with HT protection mechanisms.
