PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device of an internal combustion engine which can narrow the cause of defective start-up when the internal combustion engine cannot start up normally.SOLUTION: In a system capable of measuring an ion current flowing through an electrode of an ignition plug upon combustion, in such a case that the start-up cannot be ended even when a predetermined time elapses from the start-up of an internal combustion engine, a place where abnormality exists is estimated based on the length of a period in which the magnitude of ion current measured when operating the engine just before exceeds a threshold. When the length of the period in which the magnitude of ionic current exceeds the threshold is extremely long, the smoldering of the ignition plug is suspected. On the contrary, when the length of the period is extremely short, an abnormality besides the smoldering of the ignition plug, for example, the failure of a fuel injection system is suspected. When the length of the period is middle, there is such a possibility that a gas mixture leaks during a compression stroke although the combustion itself occurs. |
