PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure a large display area for input result display and other applications by reducing an area occupied for character selection and specification during a user's character input using a touch panel.SOLUTION: A character input acceptance method for a portable terminal 1 capable of information input/output via a touch panel 20 includes the steps of: displaying a slide bar 21 along a screen side at an end of a screen displayed by the touch panel 20 on the portable terminal 1; detecting a position on the slide bar 21 touched by a user and displaying an input candidate character near the position; detecting the user's slide of the slide bar 21 and displaying the input candidate character as changing the display position and the content with the slide position; and detecting the user's touch for a fixed time or longer in the area of display of the input candidate character and inputting the touched input candidate character.
