The method involves controlling fluid flow over a fluid supply line (105) into a cylinder space (102) by utilizing a digital inlet valve (104), where the cylinder space comprises two states in which fluid flow is released and disabled. A number of pumping cycles is provided in a predetermined period. A number of switching of the inlet valve is provided between two states, where the number of switching is independent of switching of number of pumping cycles in the predetermined period. A reference signal is provided, where the reference signal comprises information over the pumping cycles. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a high pressure pump.
