PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an abnormality diagnostic device and an abnormality diagnostic method which can achieve early and highly-accurate diagnosis of damage of a retainer.SOLUTION: An abnormality diagnostic device includes a non-contact laser displacement meter detecting a variation &Dgr;L of a distance L between an outer peripheral surface 20a of a retainer 20 and an inner peripheral surface 12a of an outer ring 12. The non-contact laser displacement meter determines that the retainer 20 is abnormal when the variation &Dgr;L exceeds a predetermined threshold.
