<p>A solar thermal power plant (20) comprises a solar radiation receiver (28) mounted on a tower (22) surrounded by a heliostat field (24) to receive solar radiation reflected by heliostats (26) forming the heliostat field (24). The power plant (20) comprises a power generation circuit (30) including a steam turbine (34) for driving an electrical generator (36) to produce electrical power, and water circulating through the solar radiation receiver (28) is capable of being heated directly by solar radiation reflected onto the solar radiation receiver (28) by the heliostat field (24) to generate superheated steam to drive the steam turbine (34). The power plant (20) also comprises an energy storage circuit (42) including a thermal energy storage fluid, such as molten salt, and a heat exchanger (48) for receiving a proportion of superheated steam diverted from the power generation circuit (30) and for transferring heat from the diverted superheated steam to the thermal energy storage fluid. To enhance the plant' s operational efficiency, the heat exchanger (48) cools the diverted superheated steam to a temperature above its saturation temperature so that the steam exiting the heat exchanger (48) is in its superheated state.</p> |
