A device for loading and unloading fuel elements to and from reactor channels is contained between inner and outer top protective walls of the reactor and is carried on a rotatable plug mounted in the upper or outer wall. Since the changing machine has no integral shielding, its weight is considerably reduced. The loading machine is carried on a trolley running on rails supported on the underside of the plug and is placed in alignment with a given fuel channel by firstly positioning the machine at the correct radius on its rails, and by rotating the plug to the required angular position. As seen in Fig. 1, the reactor core 2 has situated above it two concrete walls 3, 4 defining a space therebetween. The plug 6 is rotatable and the radial position of the loading machine 9 is varied by running along rails 7. The loading machine (Fig. 2) includes a sealed container 14 in which are housed a winch and grapple 20 and a revolver chamber type magazine 10 comprising a number of tubes 11 open at both ends. An annular closure 21 prevents elements dropping out of the tubes, and a slide 22 is arranged in a gap in the closure 21 coincident with the machine nose 16, for sealing off and providing access to a fuel channel 1 to which the machine nose 16 has been connected. Also mounted on the charging machine frame is coolant and heat exchange unit 27 for cooling elements stowed in the magazine 10. A plugged hole 29 is provided for obtaining access to the interior of the chamber 14. Servo systems are provided for positional control of the charging machine. |
