A payment service system and method for accepting and reconciling consumer credit or debit account transactions between merchants and consumers comprises: a merchant database 135 comprising merchant records, each comprising a merchant ID field and at least one terminal ID field; a Point-Of-Sale server 200; and a payment terminal 210 having stored in it one of the terminal IDs. To server receives a transaction request from a merchant portable communication device operating the POS terminal application, and further receives a terminal ID from the payment terminal and checks the received terminal ID against the plurality of terminal ID fields in an associated merchant record in the merchant database to verify the transaction request is coming from one of the merchant's assigned payment terminal. Also claimed are six other inventions relating to further payment service systems and methods and a method of assessing a risk of accepting a merchant and a method of analysing transactional data. |
