870,479. Pneumatictyres. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. Feb. 26, 1960 [April 24, 1959], No. 6777/60. Class 144 (2). In a pneumatic tyre having a breaker assembly comprising plies 18, of parallel metal wires, overlying the crown region of the carcase 10, the breaker assembly is itself overlaid with a layer 23 of rubber stock reinforced with a random dispersion of metal wire fragments, which may be steel of 0.006 inch diameter in lengths of from to 2 inches, the layer 23 extending beyond the edges of the breaker assembly into the shoulder regions 14 of the tyre. As shown, the carcase 10 comprises a plurality of textile parallel cord plies crosslaid with a cord angle in the range 38 to 41 degrees, and the breaker assembly comprises two cross-laid plies of parallel steel wires having a cord angle of 35 to 38 degrees. A rubber cushioning strip 22 having thickened side edges insulates the breaker assembly from the carcase and a further strip 24 of rubber tread stock separates the breaker assembly from the wire-reinforced layer 23. The layer 23 tapers towards each side edge, and as shown in Fig. 4, may have tongues 23a at each side which extend beneath the breaker assembly and taper towards the tread centre. The layer 23 may extend into the radially inner portion of the sidewall. |
