A process for removing soot from suspensions thereof in water p comprises mixing the suspension with a water-immiscible auxiliary liquid e.g. oil, separating the soot and oil from the water by filtering as through a perforated endless belt, and filtering the still impure aqueous phase either through three layers respectively of progressively larger or smaller particles of granular silica e.g. sand or gravel, the finest layer of which may be continuously or intermittently renewed, or through a homogeneous mixture of such particles of different sizes. The silica may be kept covered with a layer of the aqueous phase, from which floating impurities are skimmed. Quantitative process examples are given. |
