PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact optical scanner suitable for the layout of image forming system, in which a high quality image is formed in which superimposing precision of images is improved when the image is formed by mixing colors, and variation in coloring is small, and also to provide an image forming apparatus using the optical scanner. SOLUTION: The optical scanner has: a plurality of light source means 107, 108, 109 110 corresponding to a plurality of colors modulated by image information; a deflection means 441 which collectively scans the respective light beams 201, 202, 203, 204 from the light source means; and a plurality of imaging means 120, 121 which forms images of the respective light beams scanned with the deflection means on faces to be scanned corresponding to the respective colors. The respective light beams are split into a single light beam 201 which forms an image with a single color, and light beam groups 202, 203, 204 which form the image by mixing a plurality of colors, the light beam groups are deflected in a same direction to perform a main scanning, and the single light beam is deflected in the opposite direction of the light beam groups with respect to the deflection means to perform the main scanning.
