1,008,116. Change-speed gearing. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Aug. 9, 1963 [Aug. 9, 1963], No. 31461/63. Heading F2D. [Also in Division B7] In a motor vehicle transmission a shaft 21 coupled to the engine crank-shaft 1 by an hydraulic torque converter 4 carries a gear 27 driving a transfer gear cluster 31, 35 meshing with gears 37, 41 selectively connectable by fluid-actuated friction clutches 47, 49 to an output shaft 45 which drives a differential disposed beneath the engine. The gears 37, 41 are carried by sleeve shafts 39, 43 arranged coaxially about the output shaft 45 and each provided with a hub 51 having splined thereto friction discs 53 engageable by fluid pressure applied to an annular piston 65 with discs 55 splined to a clutch housing 63 on the output shaft 45. A reverse idler gear 64 (Fig. 2) meshing with the transfer gear 35 is connectable by a splined sleeve 69 to a gear 77 meshing with a gear 67 splined to the clutch housing 63. The differential crown wheel 88 is driven by a pinion 87 on a sleeve 83 splined to the output shaft 45. |
