The invention comprises difficultly water-soluble monoazo dyestuffs containing no water solubilizing groups which dissociate acid in water of the formula <FORM:1008171/C4-C5/1> wherein X represents a sulphonic acid amide group which may be substituted at the nitrogen atom, or a sulphonylamino group derived from a primary or secondary amine, R represents the radical of a para-substituted hydroxy benzene coupled in o-position to the hydroxyl group, A represents a p-phenylene radical which may contain substituents. The dyes are prepared by diazotising an appropriate amine containing the required acylamino radical and coupling with an appropriate p-substituted phenol or by reacting with an appropriate amino azo dye an appropriate acylating agent. In an example benzoic acid chloride-3-sulphonic acid butylamide is reacted with 2-hydroxy-5-methyl-41-amino-1,11-azo benzene to obtain a yellow dye. Additional examples relating to the preparation of further dyes and a dyeing process are furnished and many alternative starting materials are listed. The dyes are employed for dyeing from aqueous dispersion cellulose di- and triacetate and glycol terephthalate.
