The method comprises attaching the pipetting tip via a cone to a pipetting tube connected to a pump, creating a pressure difference between inside the pipetting tube and surroundÂings thereof and driving an RC oscillator to oscillate, measuring the pressure differÂence and a frequency of the RC oscillator, comparing the pressure difference and the frequency to predetermined threshold values and determining size and type of the pi-petting tip, The detector comprises a pressure sensor adapted to measure a pressure difference between inside a pipetting tube and surroundings thereof, and a capacitive sensor adapted to measure a frequency of an RC oscillator, the pipetting tube and a pipetting tip being switched parallel to a capacitor of the RC oscillator, the pipetting tip and the pipetting tube being made of conducting material.
