Practice mortar ammunition is provided with an auxiliary firing pin that prevents wear of the main firing pin of the mortar. As shown, a dummy shell 4 has an axial bore 6 housing a sub-calibre practice shell 7 having a case 8 that is retained in position by a breech member 11 threaded into the bottom of the dummy shell. An auxiliary firing pin 14 having a flange 15 is slidable in a bore 12 of the breech member and is further provided with an extension 19 adapted to surround and protect the main firing pin 21 of the mortar 1. When the shell is dropped into the mortar, the rim 22 of extension 19 first engages the surface 23 around the main firing pin. The shell however continues to fall until the upper surface of flange 15 abuts surface 17 of the breech member and the lower surface of a plate 18 abuts surface 23. At this point, the firing pin 14 penetrates detonator 10 and a flame strikes through passage 25 to ignite the propellant charge 26 of the practice shell.</p> |
