A cover glass which when used with a vehicle headlamp comprising a substantially parabolic reflector and a filament substantially at the focus of the reflector with its longitudinal axis extending horizontally at right angles to the reflector axis produces a beam pattern having an upper boundary extending partly in a horizontal direction and partly in an upwardly inclined direction, has a first portion for producing images of the filament spread in a horizontal direction and a second portion consisting of at least one sector-shaped part for producing images spread on an upwardly-inclined direction, a boundary of which upwardly-inclined images forms the upwardly-inclined part of the boundary, the cover glass being fitted to the lamp so that each sector-shaped part is disposed with its axis of symmetry inclined to the horizontal and substantially perpendicular to the upwardly-inclined part of the boundary. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the cover glass is divided into eight sectors I-VIII and has two central portions IX, X forming a circle. Light from the areas of the reflector corresponding to sectors II and VI produces images 30, Fig. 3, of the filament, the two sectors being of smooth glass formed as prisms thicker towards the righthand side and upwards. Light from the areas of the reflector corresponding to sectors I, III, V and VII produces images 31, Fig. 3, the sectors having vertical ribs for spreading the light laterally. Light from the areas of the reflector corresponding to the sectors IV and VIII produces images 32, the sectors being provided with vertical ribs for spreading the light and being formed as prisms thicker at the cover edge. The central portions IX, X are formed so as to deflect the light downwards and to spread it laterally. In a modification, the inclined images 50, Fig. 5, are produced by means of the sector II, the horizontal images 51 by the sector III, the horizontal images 52 by the sectors I and V, the horizontal images 53 by the sector IV and the horizontal images 54 by the sectors VI, VII and VIII. All the sectors except I, III and V have vertical lightspreading ribs and are formed as prisms to deflect the light in the appropriate directions. The lamp may be formed as a " sealed beam " headlamp.
