<p>Provided in the present invention is an apparatus for calculating the distance between vehicles and a method for calculating the distance. Location movement information of both selfsame vehicle and a target vehicle is transmitted from a global positioning system, and is substituted into a dead-reckon formula which includes the below mathematical formulae 1 and 2. Therefore, when calculating the location movement information of the selfsame and target vehicles according to the time, the distance between the two vehicles according to the travel ranges of both vehicles, for a predetermined length of time, can be calculated as a vector sum.
