The device has a support frame and a gripping unit (1). The gripping unit has a base plate (2), a gripper arm (3) arranged on the base plate and an electromagnet (4). The gripper arm is brought in a gripping position and a closed position of the gripping unit is locked by magnetic force generated by the electromagnet. An independent claim is also included for a method for handling material webs, particularly fiber material webs.
